Xian Xing-hai
Yellow River Cantata

A celebration of music that will undoubtedly stir the soul in its nationalistic fervour – the centrepiece of the program will be the Yellow River Cantata by Chinese composer Xian Xinghai. An epic work scored for large orchestra with additional Chinese musical instruments, narrator, soloists and large SATB choir, this modern choral masterpiece was inspired by a patriotic poem by Guang Weiran and conceived as an ode to the great river that is the wellspring of the Chinese civilisation.

The concert will feature a commissioned work for symphony orchestra and choir by local composer Law Wai-Lun, a highly respected composer whose seminal works for Chinese Orchestras, including “Admiral of the Seven Seas”, have been hailed as modern classics. Unfortunately, he is virtually unknown to audiences of western classical music, and thus it is a true honour and privilege for the BHSO to have this opportunity to collaborate with him and share his music with our audience. The composition is conceived as a musical exploration of themes drawn from “Home” by celebrated local songwriter Dick Lee. It is hoped that this symphonic re-imagining of our Singapore’s most beloved national song will be immediately be taken to heart and enjoyed by all.

Maestro Yeh Tsung returns to the podium after masterfully leading the orchestra in a critically acclaimed concert in March 2017 which included Leong Yoon Pin’s “Dayong Sampan” Overture & Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. The BHSO is also pleased to welcome Maestro Yeh to his newly appointed role with the orchestra as Artistic Advisor.
